THE SHROPSHIRE MAGAZINE FEBRUARY 2010   The cover has an excellent picture of Roy, and inside is a very good article about the Deerstalkers.

The Strand magazine, Vol 1, January to June 1891.  A bound volume.  No Holmes and Watson, but worth reading to expand your knowledge of those times – this background information will surely enhance your enjoyment of the canon.

As above but Vol 2 July to December.  Read A Scandal In Bohemia, The Red-Headed League, A Case Of Identity, The Boscombe Valley Mystery, The Five Orange Pips, The Man With The Twisted Lip, and remember you are looking at the same pages as the original reader way back in 1891.  Enjoy, as he did, the lovely illustrations with the monogram ‘SP’.

‘SHERLOCK HOLMES’ MAGAZINE ‘The Detective Magazine’

Very similar to ‘Sherlock’ Magazine.  Indeed the editor is the same for both.  However a quick look shows these seem to have more items about Holmes and fewer more general items.

The Maiwand Dispatches.  Further Papers on the Battle of Maiwand and Associated  Canonical & Military Matters.  Dispatch No 1, July 2001.  A Monograph by the Friends of Doctor Watson. I commend this slim volume to all Deerstalkers.

The following have been added to the collection:  Bad Puns Made Verse, by William Hyder, BSI.  Most of us are familiar with Philip’s readings from this slim vol, which was awarded to me at the recent Mrs Hudson’s Dinner Party in recognition of my frequent contributions to the Bugle.  I am indebted to Roy for this very thoughtful gesture.

These fascinating magazines contain thought-provoking articles about all manner of matters Sherlockian, many very learned and erudite and others more light-hearted.  That is my impression following a brief scan through the pages.

Recommended bedtime, or bathtime, reading!

The Baker Street Bugle.  Roy is providing a complete set of Bugles for the library, though it is not yet complete.  It currently (May 7th) goes back to Issue 13.  They make fascinating reading for those of us whose own collections beginning later than that.

PETREL FLYER is the newsletter of the Stormy Petrels of British Columbia, published six times per year.  Basically it is very similar to The Baker Street Bugle in layout and content.  They have donated three copies: July/August 1999; Spring 2007; January/February 2009.
